Why Japanese?

As a Korean American student, I wanted to become familiar not only with my Korean roots, but also with that of the neighboring countries. And Japan is a country that has influenced Korea greatly, if not the most. Although decades have passed since the Japanese imperialism left Korea, Japan and Korea still have unreconciled conflicts that perhaps demand continued attention. I believe learning Japanese can help me understand both sides and play an effective role in further conversations for alleviation of the conflicts. I'm looking forward to become more fluent in the Japanese language and in the understanding of the culture through the Japanese I class at Columbia University. It's also a blessing to have a Korean-Japanese instructor who can perhaps provide further insight to the ongoing conflict.
